Mountain Blackbirds 12, Mountain Reds 8

Game writeup submitted by Mountain Blackbirds

The 38-and-over Blackbirds have won two games and lost four in the Tucson Mens Senior Baseball League, but if last night's 12-8 victory over the Reds at Reid Park is any indication, look for them to move up in the MSBL Mountain Division standings in the coming weeks. Last night, the Blackbirds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but the Reds scored five in the bottom of the inning and looked like they were going to take control of the game. And to make matters worse, the Blackbirds' starting pitcher Sean Flynn came up with a hamstring pull in the second inning and had to be replaced by Hector Iglecias. Instead of folding up, the Blackbirds fought back. They scored 10 more runs in the middle innings as everyone in the lineup chipped in and when the Reds came to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning, for their final at bat, the Blackbirds had a four-run lead and needed just three outs to win their second game of the season. Iglecias coaxed the Reds' batters to go quietly as hard hit ground balls to third-sacker Allen Gillespie, shortstop Sean Rollins and second baseman Danny Price resulted in a 1-2-3 inning. The Blackbirds started the game without two starters in the lineup. Dave Delk and Rich Rochon are nursing injuries, causing manager Robin Badart to change the lineup around, but to the Blackbirds credit they still didn't fold and found a way to win. Iglecias, who leads the league in hits with 14, went 4 for 5 last night, while first baseman Tom Bolen knocked in three runs and is now second on the club with six RBI. Badart leads the Blackbirds in runs batted in with eight. The Mountain A's are the only undefeated team in the division. The Blackbirds are in seventh place and take on the winless D'backs next Thursday at Reid Park. (writeup by Dan Price) http://bookemdanosports.blogspot.com

Game writeup submitted by Mountain Braves

The Red Sox erased an 8 run deficit and tied it up in the last inning, but the Braves managed to push one across in the bottom half of the inning to get the win. Spearheading the offense was Billy Vega, who went 3-5, a homer shy of the cycle. That homer was had by Joey Perez who reluctantly chugged out an in side the park grand slam. Pedro Erceg contributed with a 2-4 night and 3 RBI's. The drama came in the last inning with the scored tied and 1 out, when Billy doubled to right center, Erceg drew a walk, Ray Peralta singled, loading the bases for Pat Ronan who was 2-4 at the time. Pat promptly shot the 1st pitch between short and 3rd, preserving the win for pitcher Wayne Cooper.

The Blackbirds trade punches pretty evenly with the Yankees through four, but the bats got quiet and the Yankees got hot and pulled away for the win. Hector Iglecias did a fine job of keeping the Yankees off balance from the mound, Sean Rollins was 2-2 and scored 3 times, and team manager Robin Badart (2-3) drove in 4 of the Birds 6 runs, but it wasn't enough. Good game Yankees!

The Blackbirds are in the win column, thanks in part to a strong pitching performance by Hector Iglecias, who tallied up 9 K's in 8 innings, giving up only 5 hits and 1 earned run. Iglecias also had a great night at the plate, going 3-3 with a triple and scored 4 of the Blackbirds 12 runs. New birds Sean Rollins and Paul Smith added additional punch to the lineup. Good game Bombers, and good luck this season!

Thanks to the Phillies for loaning us a right-fielder so we could have 9 on defense.

The Blackbirds took the field for their inaugural 2012 season opener against the RedSox. The Birds took an early lead, but the RedSox fought back and took charge coming out on top 11-6. It was a good game between the new Blackbirds and a more experienced RedSox team that pitted good friends and former teammates against each other. The new Blackbird defense turned 2 double plays, and the offense was led by Sean Flynn (3-4, 2b, 4 rbi), Hector Iglecias (3-4), and team captain Tom "T-bone" Bolen (2-3, 2b). Good game RedSox!
